The Corazon Cinema and Café celebrates its grand opening Friday, September 26th, 2014. I think it will be a big star here in Saint Augustine.
The Corazon Cinema and Café is located at 36 Granada Street, in historic downtown St. Augustine (formerly known as “Pot Belly’s Theater.”)
This Drafthouse style cinema will feature Sundance film festival style films 7 days a week starting at 7:00 pm. They will also be serving up lunch from 11:00 – 3:00 and other goodies all day long.
I spoke with the owner of the Corazon, Karla Wagner the day I stopped in. She was delightful to meet with and her passion for the renovation of this historic theater really shined through. Her goal is to create an art house with eating, drinking and entertainment, all in one great spot. They are all about community here too. They have all ready committed to hosting some of the films for the Saint Augustine Film Festival in January, 2015.
The building dates back over 125 years. It was home to a cigar factory, upholstery shop and a feed store. The original brick in parts of the building has been left exposed to preserve the buildings history. The Cinema has three theater rooms where movies are shown. Two of the rooms have comfortable large seats with tables to eat and drink at. One thing to note, they will not have wait staff waiting on you during your movie. You go out to the bar area and order just as you would a normal theater. This is great news if you like to not be disturbed while you enjoy your movie. Down the road they will also be adding matinee shows, perfect if you’re looking to find something to do on a rainy day or to escape the afternoon heat. Of course they are serving up popcorn, candy, soda, beer and wine with that movie too. You can check out our Music & nightlife page for movie schedules and to view trailers for what’s playing each week.
If you are looking to have a bite of lunch that any local would approve of, they have that too. The Corazon has picked up two great local chefs, Joe and Tammy Abel formally of the Cheese Wheel. They have all of the famous Cheese Wheel Sandwiches cleverly renamed after movie stars. They also have a selection of salads and French bread pizzas. You will find a selection of beer and wine too. Beer starts at $4.00 for domestics – $6.00 for imports and wine is $5.00 for house & $7.00 for select. They will also offer take out. Here is the complete menu.
