LaCURA Salt Spa in Saint Augustine, Florida

salt Now there’s a new way to live the salt life in St Augustine, FL. Check out LaCURA’s new salt room that recently opened on the island  just over the Bridge of Lions.

My mom has been raving about the benefits of salt therapy. She suffers from asthma and swears salt therapy has brought her relief. She has been visiting a salt room in Connecticut and keeps asking me to check it out on my next visit. I was thrilled when I heard a salt room was opening in Saint Augustine. The pollen in Florida is at yet another peak and my allergies are going strong. Move over Claritan, I’m trying salt therapy.

City Wellness Spa Offers Facials and Spa Services in St Augustine FL

city1Anyone wanting to relax and get pampered at a spa always thinks about getting a massage. Have you ever thought of relaxing by getting a facial? I have always been torn between the two. I love a great massage, but nothing relaxes me in the same way as a facial. I love how clean my face feels and how my skin glows afterword. I recently went to City Wellness Spa to get a facial and was blown away by the experience. Christine Servello was my esthetician and I chose to get the Acme/hormonal facial listed on the spa menu. This deep cleansing facial combats bacteria, reduces inflammation, soothes irritation, and aids hydration. It is a 60 minute facial for $85.00 and was worth every penny. St. Johns county residents can get a 10.00 discount off of their first spa service at City Wellness.IMG_2832

I had been suffering from a lot of breakouts along with dry skin lately and I decided it time to put it in the hands of a professional, since I wasn’t having any luck with the dermatologist. Christine graduated from the Christine Valmy International School of Esthetics in NYC in 1998. She is a fantastic esthetician and she focuses on healing the skin with organic products and natural therapies. City Wellness offers an extensive list of facials on the spa menu including an anti-aging facial, a pear and poppy seed polishing micro-derma-brasion facial, facial enzyme exfoliation and customizable facials to meet your specific needs. They do facials for men too.

My skin needed a little of everything that day. It needed decongestion, moisture, exfoliation and IMG_2817extractions done. I was definitely in the right place and in the right hands with Christine Servello. The products used on me really agreed with my skin. They use only Eminence handmade organic skincare from Hungary. Every esthetician  I’ve ever visited does a facial a little differently, but Christine really knew how to do a fabulous facial with extractions and get me into a deep relaxation at the same time.

She started out cleansing my skin thoroughly to remove every trace of makeup and oil from my face. She used Calm Skin Chamomile Cleanser,  a calming cream cleanser for sensitive skin prone to redness. Chamomile, arnica and rosemary soothe skin while gently removing impurities. Cruelty-free and formulated without parabens, sodium lauryl sulfates, synthetic dyes, petrochemicals, animal by-products, phthalates, GMOs and triclosan. She rinses your skin in between different treatments with tea infused water that is   loaded with antioxidants and smells fabulous.

After cleansing my skin thoroughly, she did a light skin brushing that exfoliates your skin gently as it polishes. She steamed my skin and treated it with a glycolic mask to ready it for extractions. This in turn made the extraction process painless and quick and she did a great job at removing the impurities from my pores.  She then continued with a series of masks from Eminence organics such as the Blueberry Soy Repair Masque,  a revitalizing, moisturizing and age-defying masque for mature, dry, dehydrated, sun-damaged or devitalized skin.
Key Ingredients in this masque that make it special are:

  • Blueberry Juice & Pulp: high in antioxidants and phyto-nutrients
  • Non-GMO Soy: rich in isoflavones and vitamin B
  • Shea Butter: calming and moisturizing
  • Raspberry Juice: vitamin C and phyto-nutrient rich
  • Bramble Juice: high in vitamin A, vitamin C and antioxidants
  • Calendula Oil: antioxidant; soothing
  • Biocomplex™: a booster of antioxidants, vitamins, Coenzyme Q10, and Alpha Lipoic Acid to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve the appearance of skin.

cityI loved the way this felt and smelled. It just smelled so healthy and clean and sent me deeper into a state of relaxation.

Christine’s massage of my head, face and neck were beyond wonderful. She truly is a gifted  esthetician.  This deeply relaxing facial had many steps in the process with a variety of incredible organic products, too many to list here.  Each and every one of them was a wonderful experience and was customized just for my skin.  When my facial was done and I looked in the mirror, I was thrilled at how my skin glowed.  You could not tell I had just had extractions done  and my skin looked clear, moisturized and firm. I was completely relaxed and rejuvenated and looking forward to my next facial.

So if your looking to relax in a delightful way, try a facial at City Wellness.  It’s the perfect place to relax and renew.

Our Pick for Cleanest Nail Salon in St. Augustine, FL

We are constantly asked the question, “what is the cleanest nail salon in St. Augustine?”
While the spas on our list are clean, we wanted to give you an option for a doctor owned nail spa.

IMG_0306Medi Nails & Spa is all about your safety and health!

I recently went in for a manicure and pedicure to check them out for the Locals’ Guide readers. I was really impressed with Medi Nails and Spa. They are owned and operated by a doctor, but they still have a very relaxing spa like atmosphere. I loved the fact that they have cozy little private rooms for your manicure and pedicure and there is no overwhelming smell of acrylics as they only do natural nails. From start to finish, they go above and beyond in cleanliness and safety. All instruments are sterilized in an autoclave for starters and individually packaged just for you. The nail files and buffers are new and only used on you. They are wrapped up separately to keep them sterile until you are ready for your service. You can even take them home with you if you wish to. The foot baths have disposable liners for added safety and your feet are soaked in a cleanser and softening solution that goes quickly to work on dry cracked skin.
IMG_0303I never get a manicure because I get nervous about getting my cuticles cut. A family member once had a horrible nail infection from a walk-in salon. I decided to let Medi Nails and Spa trim them knowing I was in good hands. I was glad I did! After months of throwing pottery, I couldn’t believe what a difference it made. The soak that you put your nails in is infused with vitamin C and minerals and leaves your skin bright and your nails white.
As for the pedicure, I went for the Ultimate Pedicure for an extra $5.00. They apply a hydrating or pumice mask on your feet and warm booties. My feet haven’t felt that smooth in years. If you have a problem with your  feet you need to address, you can go for the Footlogix Pedicure. This is a special line of products for fungus, diabetes or severe dry skin. The line has 10 different treatment mousses that absorb quickly with no oily residue that treat different problems, even sweaty feet.
IMG_0314They also provide artificial toe nail replacements. Unlike acrylic, it’s made of a material that is sterile, antifungal and flexible. Now you don’t have to wait for your nail to grow back to wear flip flops again.
If you or a family member have health issues and are housebound they will make house calls. Each technician has advanced training in afflictions like diabetes, fungus and skin ulcers and can work with patients with dementia.

IMG_0316Medi Nails & Spa also offers facials, waxing and massage along with their nail services.
They offer a monthly VIP Membership for $59.99 a month. Membership includes one signature service every month, a 15% discount on additional services, family sharing and a 10% discount on retail products.

What is Reiki- Experience It in St Augustine FL

I was introduced to Reiki  years back when I was having neck issues from hours of daily driving and a lot of stress. I have always carried my stress in my neck and shoulders and my chiropractor was at his wits end with trying to help me. He suggested I try Reiki and so I did. I tried it on a regular basis and it opened up a whole new world for me in learning how to care for myself. Since then, I not only use it when I am in pain, I use it when I feel stuck or overwhelmed or when I  am having trouble letting go of something.

If you really want to learn more of the technical stuff about Reiki you can check out my Reiki practitioner’s blog post about it.  I can only tell you what it means to me.

I recently had a Reiki session with Jennifer Jacobsen at City Wellness.

I have never been one to make New Year’s resolutions, I tend to change with the seasons. It was the first day of Fall and I had been feeling stuck lately. I didn’t seem to have the energy to start all of the new and exciting things I had planned for my future. I had the excitement but the physical energy just wasn’t there. I felt a Reiki session would be the perfect way to get me unstuck.

Jennifer is a natural born healer and an excellent massage therapist who has helped me so many times with aches and pains. I trusted her entirely with Reiki.

To me, Reiki is the transfer of energy, a healing energy. I could feel the heat and energy pouring through her hands into my body from a source much larger than us both. In the beginning of my session I could not believe the amount of heat I was feeling. Jennifer later explained that I had been so depleted of energy my body was just absorbing everything it could get to restore itself. I could also feel energy and warmth in areas of old injury or places I was experiencing pain. I also was in such a deep state of relaxation that my mind had finally quieted down enough to just be. This is what I came for, this energy, this new beginning.

I got off the table that day with a happy, relaxed, recharged body. I felt light and joyful. I felt great! A few days later I noticed my aches and pains had faded away too. I left them behind on that table. I traded them for health.

I am so happy my old chiropractor introduced me to Reiki. It was a gift for me, something I truly needed.  I hope that through my writing, I can pass this knowledge to someone else who can benefit as I did.

People use Reiki for a lot of different reasons…. healing, pain management, relaxation, energy and emotional problems. Some hospitals around the country, and in the state of Florida, are offering  it for pain management for cancer patients.

I think it’s a gift, to give yourself or someone who is struggling with something. It will come in and out of your life through the years like a dear old friend, showing up in your life at just the right time.

If you are curious about a Reiki session or if you want to become a Reiki practitioner  give Jennifer a call at City Wellness.
